Scrapbooking and junk journaling are hobbies made for people who loves to test their creativity and cherishes everything they keep, and the things that makes this hobby wonderful, is the ability to keep the physical results forever in every page of a book, so when the time comes when cherished memories are pasted and every trinkets is taped onto, you’ll close the book only to realize, you can’t even close it anymore cause it got too bulky.
On a similar note, I have friends who’s book exploded, and I have friends who don’t dare finish their book anymore because of this reason, so even when they try to open their book, it feels like it will close itself. The reason why it got to this point is because the spine of the book is fixed and unable to expand, and the pages are getting thicker from all the decorations added onto them, so in result the book became too bulky. I can’t promise you I can compress your book to the point it looks like you just bought it, cause they do say, to be loved is to be changed, but I can recommend you tips and tricks, so you can at least close your book and prevent big bulkyness
1.Type of book
As I mentioned, the spine of the book is what’s keeping everything together, and because a regular book’s spine is fixed and has a limited amount of space, the book becomes harder to close. So I recommend you buy a ring binder book (ShopeeMY). Since the main problem is the spine, you might as well get a ring binder book, since its spine is adjustable and allows the pages to have more room as the book gets thicker. This means you can keep adding pages, and you don’t have to keep buying new books for every book you finish. In my personal opinion, I would prefer to have a limit on my books, so I have multiple books to keep. I’m using a post-bound scrapbook album (ShopeeMY).
2. Sticking it
For people who don’t want to buy binder rings, I advise you to stick 2-3 pages together with glue sticks (ShopeeMY) after every page you make. The reason why this works is that it reduces the number of pages you’ll decorate, which means fewer layers of scraps, stickers, and other decorations building up throughout the entire book, and even though this means fewer pages to decorate and work with, I’d say it’s better than a combusted book. If you don’t like glue stick, you can always use glue tape (ShopeeMY), but if you ask me, glue tape is too precious, so I’d buy a really big double-sided tape (ShopeeMY).
3. Thin Decoratives
What makes pages bulk is obviously because pages are too thick, so if the scraps or junk you bring home to paste are too thick, if possible you can rip in between to make it thinner, I’ve seen people ripped logos out of pizze boxes using really big transparent tape (ShopeeMY) and pasting that, instead of the actual cardboard, and besides that you can decorate and layer with actual thin decoratives like thin decorative paper packs (ShopeeMY), or my personal favorite, big vintage washi tapes (ShopeeMY), these things are so thin, you can barely see them when you close the book, and I would also reccomend flat stickers. There are really cute, thick, textured stickers, but if you’re really eager to keep your pages as thin as possible, you should use flat stickers and reserve your thicker ones for occasional use.
